Eyelids are very thin, and your eyes are unique. They have no natural protection against ultraviolet exposure like the skin does in melanin production capability.

Cotton balls won't work, nor will a towel, bottle caps, certainly not contact lenses - not even metal coins. Light shouldn't leak in around the edges of your eyewear, either.

The only way to do the job of protecting your precious eyes is to wear specially designed and manufactured eyewear for indoor tanning. Nothing else that you can wear on your eyes will keep out 99.9% of UVB and 99% of UVA.
